Mail-In Voting Is Corrupt Unless Trump Is Doing It

Trump votes by mail again while trying to ban it for everyone else. A roast of the most prolific mail voter in America, by his own definition.

Mail-In Voting Is Corrupt Unless Trump Is Doing It

So here's a thing that actually happened, and I need you to sit with it for a second before your brain tries to protect you from it: on August 13, Donald Trump filled out a mail-in ballot for Florida's primary, licked the envelope (or made someone lick it for him, let's be honest), and sent it off through the very postal system he's spent months telling everyone is a fraud-delivery service run by criminals, and then eleven days later the Supreme Court let parts of his order restricting mail-ballot delivery keep moving forward while the lawsuits pile up, which means the guy is literally out here voting by mail while trying to make voting by mail harder for you.

And this is not some one-time slip-up. This man has a mail-in voting career. He voted absentee by mail in the 2018 midterms as a New Yorker. He voted by mail in Florida's March 2020 primary. He voted by mail again in Florida's August 2020 primary, at the exact same time he was tweeting that mail voting would produce "the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history" and floating the idea of delaying the election over it. His press secretary got asked how the president could request a mail ballot while calling mail ballots a disaster and her answer was basically a shrug in human form. The man has cast more mail ballots than most of the people he's trying to stop from casting one.

And then there's the big one, the load-bearing lie of his entire late career: 2020. He lost that election, lost it by seven million votes and 74 electoral votes, and rather than accept that, he blamed mail-in ballots for it, told everyone the mail votes were "found" in the middle of the night, demanded they stop the count in states where he was ahead and keep counting in states where he was behind (a legal theory known as "heads I win, tails you cheated"), filed sixty-something lawsuits that got laughed out of court by judges including ones he appointed, watched Georgia count its ballots three separate times and get the same answer, and even got a Republican-funded audit in Arizona that ended up finding more votes for Biden. Every recount, every audit, every court said the same thing: the mail ballots were fine, you just lost, sir. So now announcing "I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS," all caps his, isn't a policy position, it's a grudge. He's not trying to fix a voting system, he's trying to punish one for the crime of counting him accurately.

His position, if you can call it that, goes like this: mail-in voting is corrupt, fraudulent, crooked, and possibly the thing that ends Western civilization, except when Donald Trump has a tee time. In March he said "mail-in voting means mail-in cheating – I call it mail-in cheating – and we got to do something about it all," which raises a question so obvious that a golden retriever could ask it: if mail-in voting means mail-in cheating, and Trump has voted by mail in 2018, 2020 twice, and now 2026, then what exactly does that make him, other than the most prolific self-confessed election cheater in America by his own definition? The answer from the White House seems to be that cheating stops being cheating the moment the return address says Mar-a-Lago.

When somebody actually asked him about it back in March, his answer was, and I promise you this is a real quote from a real adult man, "You mean, I used a mail-in ballot? You're probably saying, yeah, I did. You know why? Because I'm president of the United States…" That's it. That's the whole argument. Not "my ballot goes through extra verification," not "here's why my situation is different," just because I'm president, which is the same logic as "because I said so," except your dad at least had the decency to only use it about bedtime and not about the machinery of democracy. There was a time when "President of the United States" meant duty, service, setting an example, and now it means "the rules are for the little people, and by little people I mean all 330 million of you."

The White House called the whole thing a "non-story" and explained that Trump is registered in Florida but spends most of his time in Washington, which, sure, fine, that's a completely reasonable reason to vote by mail, and it would stay reasonable right up until you notice that the White House's own description of the SAVE America Act reads "No Mail-in Ballots (Except for Illness, Disability, Military or Travel)," and wouldn't you know it, the guy who wrote the exceptions just happens to qualify for one of them. Busy at work is apparently a valid excuse when the work is presidenting, but not when the work is nursing, trucking, teaching, soldiering overseas, or caring for a dying parent. The man reviewed his own application under his own rules and found everything in perfect order, which is roughly like letting the fox write the henhouse security policy and then act surprised when the first approved visitor badge says FOX on it.

And because subtlety left this administration in a body bag years ago, he mailed his ballot on August 13 and then went right back on the attack on August 14, saying "If you want to stay home, you can do it but we've got to make them secure because they are crooked as hell." He did not, at any point, ask Florida to investigate his own crooked-as-hell ballot, or throw it out, or even look at it funny, the same way he never once asked anyone to audit his 2018 or 2020 mail ballots, because deep down he knows exactly what every judge in 2020 knew: the system works. Mail ballots are basically tax loopholes in Trumpworld, disgusting when you use them, proof of genius when he does.

Then there's the claim that "We are now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting. All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED," which is false in the way that "the moon is made of ham" is false, because International IDEA counts 32 countries that allow postal voting for all voters or specific groups, including Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, and the UK, you know, hellholes like that. He could have checked before saying it, but fact-checking takes time and the capital letters were already warmed up.

And the MASSIVE FRAUD itself? A 2025 Brookings analysis put identified mail-ballot fraud at roughly 0.000043 percent, about four cases per ten million mail votes. That's not a criminal conspiracy, that's barely enough people to fill a minivan, and knowing fraudsters, at least one of them would no-show. For perspective, this man has personally cast more mail ballots since 2018 than the average number of fraudulent ones found in a batch of ten million.

None of which stopped his March executive order from telling the Postal Service not to deliver your ballot unless your name shows up on some new state participation list, plus federal citizenship databases, plus prioritized investigations of election officials, which is a lot of machinery to solve a problem the size of a minivan, though it's exactly the right amount of machinery if the actual goal is making sure the people who vote by mail, who in recent elections have leaned away from him, find it just annoying enough to give up. The Constitution hands authority over congressional election procedures to the states and Congress, not to whoever happens to be squatting in the White House, but Trump's answer to that little wrinkle was to declare "Remember, the States are merely an 'agent' for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes," which isn't constitutional law so much as a man confusing the United States with one of his casinos and assuming all fifty governors report to the owner (the casinos went bankrupt, by the way, which feels relevant).

Now look, the point here is not that Trump shouldn't have voted by mail. Of course he should have. Mail voting is legal, it's convenient, and it's a lifeline for military folks, seniors, disabled people, shift workers, students, caregivers, and anyone whose life doesn't allow standing in a four-hour line on a Tuesday. The point is that he has used that perfectly legitimate option over and over, in at least four elections now, while calling the exact same behaviour "cheating" when the rest of us do it, and while blaming his own election loss on the very envelopes he keeps happily licking. His ballot is secure because he cast it; yours is crooked because there's a chance it doesn't have his name checked on it.

Strip away the shouting and the invented fraud numbers and that's the entire policy: mail-in voting for Trump, hoops and databases and Postal Service checkpoints for everybody else. He doesn't oppose mail voting on principle, he clearly loves it, he's practically a subscriber, he opposes you having what he has, because the last time millions of you had it, he lost.

He voted by mail because it was convenient, then kept trying to take it away from everyone else, because hypocrisy has never once inconvenienced the man, and at this point it may be the only thing about him that's genuinely consistent.

P.S. An apology is owed for all the screaming in this piece, and to be clear, none of it was mine. Every capital letter above came factory-direct from the man himself, because it seems even the supposedly most powerful man in the world cannot accept that typing in all caps and screaming into the void is the only way he knows how to be taken seriously, the rhetorical equivalent of a toddler banging a spoon on a high chair until somebody makes eye contact. I'm sure that if we could ever get our hands on his school records, we'd find he was absent the day they covered charisma, probably out with a doctor's note about his heel spurs. Of course, we'll never know for certain, because his minions gathered up all that data before his first term and buried it deeper than Jimmy Hoffa, and unlike Hoffa, nobody's even pretending to look.
